HOW TO PLAY POOL

There are quite a few games to play on a pool table. Eight-ball is one of these games and is the most popular, so this tutorial will be geared towards that game. However, we’ll introduce all of the moving components, so you’ll be ready to play most games on a pool table. Let’s begin.

The Equipment

  • Pool Table. Most pool tables have six holes, or pockets, for the balls to be shot into. A billiards table has no holes.
  • Cue Stick. The cue stick is what you use to shoot the balls into the pockets. It’s basically a long stick with a soft tip on the end to hit the balls with.
  • Pool balls. There are 15 balls on the table when playing eight ball, but there can be different numbers for different games. You also have the cue ball, which is white, which is the ball you use to hit the other balls with, and the eight ball, which is black. The other balls are either solid or striped.

Key Terms to Know

A “break” is the opening move of the game when a player uses the cue ball to “break” the other balls up. The other balls are always lined up at one end of the table in a triangular shape.

A “scratch” is when the cue ball falls into a pocket. This is something you don’t want to do. The cue ball can also jump off the table, resulting in a scratch as well. You normally lose your turn, and the other person goes when you scratch.

The Game of Eight Ball

Eight ball is one of the easiest and the most fun games to play at BackStage Billiards in Lake Buena Vista. Someone breaks, and you alternate turns after that. Whoever hits a ball in the pocket first, is that color. For instance, if you hit a solid ball in the pocket, then you are the solid team throughout the duration of the game. Same with stripes. The object of the game then becomes who can hit their balls in first (except the eight ball), and then that person wins. The eight ball must go in last. If you accidentally hit the eight ball in a pocket before the rest of your balls, you lose. When you shoot the eight ball in after all of your balls are in, then you win.
